Based in Sacramento, multimedia photographer Frederico "Pico" van Houtryve tells visual stories in a classic 35 mm style with the latest Nikon digital SLR cameras. Pico specializes in photographing people and documenting events, such as weddings, births and engagements, as well as editorial and commercial photography, including sports, public relations, advertising, and portraits. Pico's strength is his ability to create images that speak to the mind and inspire the soul.

An award-winning former staff photojournalist at three California newspapers, including the San Francisco Examiner, Grass Valley's The Union, and most recently, Roseville's The Press-Tribune, Pico worked full-time as an editorial photographer from 2000 to 2008.

A former member of the US Junior National Team and fluent in French, Pico spent two years playing Division I field hockey while studying and working in Brussels, Belgium before returning to California in 1994 to earn two degrees at
San Francisco State University: a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism with a Photojournalism emphasis (1998) and a Master of Arts in International Relations (2007).

Since 1998, Pico has been a professional member of the National Press Photographers Association, and he subscribes to the organization's code of ethics and Best Business Practices. With more than a decade of experience as a professional freelance photographer, Pico is ready for any assignment.
Each assignment is a collaboration with his clients--carefully planned, evaluated and priced fairly--on a case-by-case basis.

Pico's clients include the US Department of Labor, Associated Press, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, San Jose Mercury News, San Francisco Chronicle, USA Today, People Magazine, Nike, Shriners Hospitals for Children, Perry Creek Winery, and Bella Pictures, to name a few, as well as several private citizens and families.

A former CNPA judge and member of the Eddie Adams Workshop Black Team, Pico regularly mentors photography students, interns, assistants and apprentices. Pico's communication skills have enhanced his career as an educator. Pico founded the Gold Country Field Hockey Association in 2004 and volunteers as a field hockey coach in Davis, CA. Pico is also available for workshops and private lessons in photography.

Take advantage of Pico's experience, insight and talent to tell your story, today. Pico's passion is making lasting images and lifelong friends with his clients. Please feel free to contact Pico personally to photograph what is most important to you. As your guide and mentor,

Stefan Tscheppe hosts a harvest festival at Perry Creek Winery in Fair Play, CA, Sept. 2008 (Pico van Houtryve)
Pico photographed our wedding on October 10th, 2009. He met with us and saw the site on his own time and had great ideas for pictures that I would never have thought of. He cataloged our day beautifully; there was no big event or small occurrence that he did not capture. Pico was a very personable and careful photographer. His work will be with us for the rest of our lives and we will cherish every image that he produced on our special day. - wedding client Leslie Stromgren, November 13, 2009.

Daily newspapering is front-line work with tight deadlines, impossible demands and constant stress. Pico is a photographer I trust on that line. - Adriel Hampton, September 18, 2008 (managed Pico at the San Francisco Examiner)

Pico has a deeper, more researched understanding of photography than most other photojournalists. When Pico looks at a picture he sees much more than just a picture. He is seeing geometry, aesthetics, symbolism, light, and the moment in the situation he is in. He uses these elements to share his insights of the world he sees and surprises people with his unique perspective of normal everyday moments. - photographer Nader Khouri, August 18, 2008 Pico has a great ability to capture a moment, even the ones you might miss. He's able to approach complete strangers and make them feel comfortable enough to get that perfect image. His photojournalistic style translates beautifully in his images, and you get a good feeling of the moment and the event! Pico's very reliable, comes with over a decade worth of experience, and is personable! I HIGHLY recommend him. - Rose-Stella Ahmed, August 10, 2008
